Several years ago I lived in an HOA that was experiencing much discord. There was a good deal of hostile, angry communication going back and forth between the homeowners and the HOA board. But I remember one homeowner’s emails: they were direct, clear, firm, and yet kind. I asked the person about her writing style, and she directed me to Marshall Rosenberg and Nonviolent Communication. I went to an introductory session at BayNVC and I immediately connected with the idea that we all share universal needs. I learned that where we sometimes differ is how we go about meeting those needs.
I took many classes there, and then in 2016 got my certification to be a mediator. I volunteered for a couple of years in the Contra Costa CA small claims court as a mediator — and now I’m doing the same in the Reno NV court system. I never imagined in a million years starting a Reno NV chapter of Sidewalk Talk, which is basically street listening, but here I am. I’ve known Eddie for several years and jumped at the chance to work with him.
